Image to ASCII Art is a free, browser-based tool that converts any image such as PNG, JPG, GIF, or WebP into text-character art you can copy or download as a .txt file. It samples the image on a character grid and maps each cell average brightness to a character, with an adjustable width and a choice of character sets, so you can dial in anything from a few rough characters to fine detail. Everything runs locally in your browser using a self-contained luminance algorithm with no external library or AI, so your image is never uploaded and there is no signup.

How to use Image to ASCII Art

  1. First, drop an image onto the upload area, or click to browse and select one such as a PNG or JPG image file.
  2. Next, drag the Width slider to set how many characters wide the art is, anywhere from twenty up to two hundred characters.
  3. Then pick a character ramp under Detail, choosing among Standard, Detailed, Blocks, and Binary to control how the brightness is rendered.
  4. Optionally toggle Invert on if your image will be shown on a dark background, so the light and dark mapping flips accordingly.
  5. Finally click the Copy button to copy the ASCII text, or use the text download button to save the result as a file.
