Social Character Counter is a free, browser-based tool that shows exactly how your post will be counted and truncated on X, LinkedIn, Threads, and YouTube before you publish. You type your post once and instantly get live character, word, and remaining counts plus a styled fake-profile preview that cuts off at each platform's real "show more" point (X at 280, LinkedIn at 210, Threads at 500, YouTube descriptions at 157). On X it also auto-splits an over-limit post into a numbered thread and can switch to t.co counting where every URL counts as 23 characters. Everything runs locally in your browser with nothing uploaded and no signup.

How to use Social Character Counter

1. Type or paste your post into the 'Post text' box (a sample post loads by default, and your text is saved locally so it persists between visits).
2. Pick a platform with the segmented X / LinkedIn / Threads / YouTube control to switch the preview and limits.
3. On X, optionally enable the 'X counting (URLs = 23 chars)' toggle so each link counts as 23 characters like t.co shortening.
4. Read the live Characters, Remaining, Words, and Thread posts / Limit stats above the preview — Remaining turns red when you go over.
5. Check the mock-profile preview to see where the platform truncates your text; on X an over-limit post is auto-split into numbered thread cards (1/n, 2/n…).
6. Use the copy button next to the text field to copy your post, then publish it on the real platform.

No. The entire tool runs locally in your browser — counting, thread-splitting, and the preview all happen on your device, and nothing is ever uploaded. Your draft is saved only in your own browser's local storage.

How does the X thread splitting work?

When you select X and your post is over 280 characters, the tool packs your text into ~270-character chunks at word boundaries and shows each as a numbered thread card (1/n). A single word or URL longer than the limit is hard-broken without splitting emoji.

Why are the character counts called 'approximate'?

Each platform measures emoji, links, mentions, and CJK characters slightly differently, so counts are close approximations of real behaviour. X is the closest match because you can enable 'X counting' to treat every URL as 23 characters via t.co shortening.

Does it actually post to X, LinkedIn, Threads, or YouTube?

No. It's a preview and counter only — it never connects to any social account. You copy your finished post and paste it into the real platform yourself.
