About DOCX → HTML, Markdown & Text

DOCX to HTML, Markdown and Text is a free, browser-based converter that turns a Microsoft Word .docx file into clean semantic HTML, best-effort Markdown, and plain text. It uses mammoth (dynamic-loaded in your browser) for the HTML and raw-text conversion, and derives the Markdown locally from that HTML, so the output is semantic, not pixel-perfect: headings, lists, tables, links and basic formatting are preserved while Word's exact fonts, spacing, colors and page layout are intentionally dropped. Use it when you need to move Word content into a CMS, a wiki, a static-site Markdown file, or any plain-text workflow. Everything runs locally on your device, your .docx is never uploaded, and there is no signup.

How to use DOCX → HTML, Markdown & Text

  1. Drop a Word .docx file onto the upload area, or click to browse and select one (up to 25 MB).
  2. Wait while the document converts in your browser; a spinner shows the progress.
  3. Use the HTML / Markdown / Text toggle to switch between the three output formats.
  4. Review the output in the read-only box, and check any conversion warnings mammoth reports.
  5. Click Copy to copy the active output, or click download to save it as .html, .md, or .txt.

Frequently asked questions

Is my .docx file uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read and converted entirely in your browser using mammoth; nothing is ever uploaded, and the whole pipeline runs on your device.
Is it free and do I need an account?
Yes, it is completely free with no signup, account, or watermark.
Which output formats can I get?
Three: clean semantic HTML and raw plain text (both produced by mammoth), plus best-effort Markdown derived locally from the HTML. You can copy any of them or download them as .html, .md, or .txt.
Will the output look exactly like my Word document?
No. The conversion is semantic, not pixel-perfect. Headings, lists, tables, links and basic formatting are preserved, but Word's exact fonts, spacing, colors and page layout are intentionally dropped in favor of clean output. For complex tables and nested lists, review the Markdown since it is a best-effort derivation.
Can I convert old .doc files or password-protected documents?
No. Only the modern .docx format is supported; open a legacy .doc in Word and Save As .docx first. Password-protected or corrupt files cannot be read and the tool will show an error.
Is there a file-size limit?
Yes, files must be 25 MB or smaller. Because everything is processed client-side, that cap keeps a large, image-heavy document from freezing or crashing the browser tab.
