About Teleprompter
Teleprompter is a free, browser-based tool that scrolls your script smoothly upward at a pace you set in words per minute, so you can read it hands-free while filming or recording. You paste your text, set the speed, font size, line height and text width, then press Start to scroll — with a Mirror toggle for reading off teleprompter glass and a one-key fullscreen mode. It runs entirely in your browser using a requestAnimationFrame scroll loop and the Screen Wake Lock API to keep your display on, so nothing is uploaded and there is no signup.
How to use Teleprompter
- Paste your script into the Script text box at the top (a sample script is loaded to start with).
- Drag the Speed slider to set your reading pace from 40 to 400 WPM, and adjust Font size, Line height and Text width to suit your setup.
- Toggle 'Mirror (glass)' if you are bouncing the screen off teleprompter glass, 'Flip vertical' if needed, and '3-2-1 countdown' for a lead-in before scrolling starts.
- Click 'Fullscreen' (or press F) to fill the screen, then press 'Start' (or the Spacebar) to begin scrolling.
- While reading, use the ↑/↓ arrow keys to nudge speed and watch the centre guide line; press 'Reset' (or R) to jump back to the top, and 'Pause' (or Space) to stop.
Frequently asked questions
- Is my script uploaded to a server?
- No. The teleprompter runs entirely in your browser — your script is read, scrolled, and counted locally on your device, and nothing is ever uploaded. Your speed and font settings are saved only in your browser's local storage.
- Is it free and do I need an account?
- Yes, it is completely free with no signup, account, or watermark.
- What is the Mirror mode for?
- Mirror flips the text horizontally so it reads correctly when you bounce the screen off a sheet of teleprompter glass mounted in front of your camera lens. There is also a separate 'Flip vertical' toggle; changing either one pauses scrolling so the text doesn't appear to spin mid-read.
- How accurate is the WPM speed setting?
- Speed in words per minute is approximate — the actual on-screen pace also depends on your font size, text width and language, so the tool maps WPM to a scroll speed and you fine-tune the slider (40–400 WPM, also adjustable live with the ↑/↓ keys) until it feels right.
- Does the screen stay on while I'm reading?
- Yes, where supported. While the script is scrolling it uses the Screen Wake Lock API to keep your display awake, and it re-acquires the lock when you switch back to the tab. It is best-effort and silently does nothing on browsers that lack the API.
- Is there a limit on script length?
- Scripts are capped at 500,000 characters. Everything runs on the main thread, so very large pastes are rejected up front to keep the page responsive; if you exceed the limit you'll see a warning and need to trim the text.
